After graduating from Michigan State University, Bob studied political science and philosophy at Virginia Tech. He has conducted research on mountaintop removal mining in West Virginia, and participated in an NSF-funded study comparing renewable energy policies at the state and local levels around the United States. He has also worked in the electric utility industry on nuclear power issues. His research interests include local disputes over wind development, wind energy permitting and regulation, state and federal renewable energy policy, environmental politics, science & technology policy, and environmental political theory. Bob is currently writing a dissertation on the politics of Denmark's renewable energy transition.
